There is still one photo missing from my last visit in Denver. I want to share it with you because I am intrigued by the architecture.

Denver International Airport, often called DIA, is the largest international airport in the United States and is located in extreme northeastern Denver, Colorado. It ranged with more than 25 million passengers in the year 2008 in the 9th place from the biggest airports over the world.
Runway 16R/34L is with a length of 16,000 feet (4,877 m) the longest public use runway in the United States. At 33,000 acres (13,355 ha), DIA is by far the largest land area commercial airport in the United States.
In September 1989, under the leadership of Denver Mayor Federico Peña, federal officials authorized the outlay of the first $60 million for the construction of DIA. Two years later, Mayor Wellington Webb inherited the megaproject, scheduled to open on October 29, 1993.
The airport’s distinctive unique white tensile architecture tension fabric roof is aesthetically designed to be reminiscent of the snow-capped Rocky Mountains in winter. Steel cables similar to those on the Brooklyn Bridge support the roof. It is also known for a pedestrian bridge connecting the terminal to Concourse A that allows travelers to view planes taxiing directly underneath and provides sweeping views of the Rocky Mountains to the West and the high plains to the East (Source: Wikipedia: Denver Airport).

Der Denver International Airport (DIA) ist ein wichtiger internationaler Verkehrsflughafen, etwa 40 Kilometer nordöstlich von Denver, Colorado im US-Bundesstaat Colorado.
DIA ersetzte 1995 den alten Stapleton International Airport, er ist damit einer der jüngsten US-amerikanischen Flughäfen. Der Bau geht zurück auf eine Initiative des Bürgermeisters von Denver, Federico Peña.
Er ist zurzeit der neunt verkehrsreichste Flughafen der Welt mit über 25 Millionen abgefertigen Passagieren in 2008 und flächenmäßig der größte Flughafen der USA. Insgesamt umfasst er 13.600 Hektar mit sechs Start- und Landebahnen. Davon sind fünf je 3.658 Meter und eine 4.870 Meter lang. Drei Runways haben einen Abstand von mindestens 1.310 Metern und lassen damit einen parallelen Betrieb auch unter schlechten Sichtbedingungen zu. Abgefertigt werden die Passagiere an 124 Fluggaststeigen. Geplant ist, den Flughafen auf zwölf Start- und Landebahnen zu erweitern. Mit den vorgesehenen 300 Fluggaststeigen sollen dann jährlich 100 Millionen Passagiere abgefertigt werden können.
Denvers sechste Runway (16R/34L) ist der größte kommerziell genutzte Runway in Nordamerika. Die Länge von 4877 Meter, mit einer Breite von 61 Meter, war nötig, um das Starten von voll beladenen Boeing 747 beziehungsweise Airbus A380 zu ermöglichen; insbesondere in den heißen Sommermonaten sinkt nämlich auf Grund der großen Höhe des Flughafens über dem Meeresspiegel die Luftdichte, weshalb die Triebwerke an nutzbarem Schub verlieren.
Entworfen wurde der neue Flughafen von den Architekten Curtis Fentress und James Bradburn. In Anspielung auf die nahe gelegenen Rocky Mountains wurde das Dach des Passagierteminals mit 34 symbolischen Bergspitzen aus lichtdurchlässigem und nahezu selbstreinigendem teflonbeschichteten Fibersegeltuch in zwei Lagen versehen. Dazwischen befindet sich ein 40 cm starkes Luftpolster. Bis zu 80 cm bewegen sich die Dachspitzen im Wind. Das Dach ist für Fentress der architektonische Höhepunkt seines Berufslebens. Es ist das bekannteste Beispiel für die Leichtbauweise in den USA (Quelle: Wikipedia Flughafen Denver).

I was in seat 2F having specifically moved to the right hand side of the plane so I could get this and a couple of other shots as we flew into the UK

the pilot had said just before we had to fasten our seatbelts that we would route directly over Heathrow and from past experience I knew that if the climatic conditions were right I might get some nice early morning shots of the city – so i thought (as I was in 3A at the time) I’m moving the other side ! So disturbing a slightly grumpy old fella to get past him (well it was 6.30 am when we took off so I suppose thats fair) i quickly got into 2F.

as it was it was quite foggy down on the ground and hazy up in the air – but this one and maybe one other deserved an airing
